PHNOM PENH: The National Assembly of Cambodia has approved two draft laws to reorganize and rename governmental bodies under the newly appointed administration.

At the first session of the newly elected National Assembly on September 14, parliamentary President Khuon Sodary approved the draft laws to establish a Secretariat of Border Affairs and to change the name of the Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection to simply, the Ministry of Inspection.

Those who submitted the name change of the Ministry of Inspection say the move is in line with the government’s Pentagon Strategy, which aims to deepen and harmonize reforms to enhance governance and institutional capacity by creating a conducive environment for the development of human capital, economic diversification, increased competitiveness, and developing the private sector toward a sustainable, environmentally friendly and digital society.

Establishing the Secretariat of State for Border Affairs is meant to replace the National Authority for Border Affairs in order to establish a new institution that is permanent, has a full management structure and authority, and can increase human resources with real expertise in technical, national, and international law in order to resolve border issues with neighboring countries, strengthen the protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity and to maintain historic border gains.
